The focus of this component is on art in the period during which the Roman Empire became Christian, lost its territories in the West, and was finally succeeded by the Eastern Roman Empire - the ‘Byzantine’ Empire, challenging the widely held view in Renaissance theory, that this shift marked the beginning of a decline in European artistic standards between c.500 and c.1300
