This course examines the phenomenon of burlesque of mainstream mythological narrative in ancient literature, philosophy and art. Is it a stable or consistent phenomenon? In what kinds of cultural context does it occur? Does mythological burlesque express genuine religious scepticism or is it a literary or cultural safety-valve? Is this really the sordid underbelly of ancient culture or another manifestation of ancient elites at play?- A barrel of laughs
